An energy management system (EnMS) allows an organisation to plan, manage, measure, and continually improves the energy performance of its facilities and comprises the following components:

  • Roles and responsibility
  • Energy policy
  • Energy objectives and energy targets
  • Energy efficiency improvement plan
  • Monitoring, measurement and analysis

The fact is ISO standards are voluntary. There is no requirement in ISO Standards for you to be externally audited. The ISO simply demand that you evidence that audits take place covering each clause of the standard.

However, having ISO50001 certification demonstrates that your organisation’s energy management system (EMS) has been independently audited and meets the requirements of ISO which can benefit your organisation in competitive pitches.

There are essentially 4 areas for ISO55001 certification

  • The processes your business must follow to run a successful Asset Management System that follows your assets, physical or intangible, throughout their life cycle
  • The areas your management team need to focus on, be involved with and be accountable for
  • How resources such as people, infrastructure and facilities must be assigned to ensure the best possible performance

ISO (the International Standards Organisation) do not demand or promote UKAS certification. In fact, they recognise and acknowledge that organisations can self-certify, or obtain independent verification to demonstrate that standards are being met.

Non UKAS providers (NDC) help achieve the same objective with less bureaucracy and greater efficiency as they are free to innovate and adapt and work independently of UKAS and the EU.
